The Academic Advising Team is dedicated to undergraduate student success during their time as students and beyond. Interested in Neuroscience (NSCI) or Neuroscience & Cognitive Science (NSCS) but not sure which degree program to choose
— B.S. in NSCI vs B.S. in NSCS — main-campus (in-person) degree vs online degree?
We help you achieve your academic and career goals by assisting you in planning your undergraduate studies, research, extracurricular activities, and resource use so you can make the most of your time at the University of Arizona.
We welcome all current and prospective students to make as many appointments as needed.
Reach out to us today to find your academic home!

Prospective Students

Prospective Students who plan to attend the University of Arizona may request a visit to Neuroscience.  This form is only for new incoming students.  Current students email the NSCI/NSCS Advisors to learn more.

One of your most important connections is to a NSCI/NSCS Advisor who will help you achieve your academic and career goals by assisting you in planning your undergraduate studies and activities. Advisors also help you connect to resources and people within Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, and the University of Arizona.
Please feel free to make an appointment with an Academic advisor at any time, whether your needs are related to your academic journey or your well-being and success.

How Can We Help?

If you are interested in majoring in Neuroscience (NSCI) or Neuroscience & Cognitive Science (NRSC) and would like to learn more about the programs and the department, we can arrange a visit. We arrange for visitors to meet with an advisor and our student ambassadors, who will take you to visit several research labs. An ideal time to visit is during spring break week (usually mid-March). We are not open on the weekends. We encourage parents to visit with their students!
All prospective freshmen must apply to the UA through the | Office of Admissions |. Prior to enrollment, you must attend a mandatory orientation session. During orientation you will meet your major academic advisor and enroll for classes. You can also schedule a tour of the UA while you are on campus through the | Office of Admissions |.

Are you planning to transfer from a community college or another University? Check out the
| Transfer Center | for more information about applying to the University and the procedure once you are admitted. You can also review the | Course Equivalency Guide | to see how courses articulate at the university.
If you are currently at an Arizona community college please check out our | Transfer Pathways | to see what courses are required in order for you to spend two years at a community college and an additional 2 years at the university. Please note that depending upon your math placement, we may recommend spending more time either at the community college or the university, depending upon your needs and interests. Transfer orientation is required, so contact Admissions to reserve your slot.

Courses You Plan to Take or Have Completed within Arizona
If the course is from a public Arizona community college or university, you do not need to have pre-approval. We have articulation agreements with public, in-state schools.
Check the Course Equivalency Guide to see how courses will transfer to UA. If your class does not automatically come in as a direct UA equivalent, you must contact the department for proper evaluation.
Once you complete the course, you must send UA an official transcript or the credits will not appear in UAccess. A "C" or better is required for a course to transfer, although it will not affect your GPA at the UA.
Courses You Have Completed Outside Arizona
For out-of-state and private institutions, verify your school and course have not been previously evaluated here. If a direct equivalency is listed for the course at the institution you plan to attend, then it will automatically articulate as that course when you submit the transcript. Please use the Transfer Evaluation Form to request an evaluation of the course for UA course equivalency or substitution. Complete all required fields. If you do not submit the syllabus, we will follow up asking for it, only delaying the process. Submission without syllabi will be denied. You can submit supplemental supporting documentation, such as course calendars, book lists, etc.
If you have not heard from anyone after three weeks, please check on the status of your request by contacting an advisor (to be linked soon). An advisor can check the status of the request and confirm if it was received or not. If it has taken that long, it's likely there was a technical glitch, and your request never made it through.

You must schedule a 30-minute appointment with an academic advisor. New major meetings are not allowed during priority registration. You may receive course suggestions during priority registration and declare after that period has finished. Seats in majors only courses will not be reserved for anyone who intends to declare during this time.

Appointments for minors are not necessary. Most questions can be answered on a drop-in basis (see advisor availability below) or through email.  Your major advisor can add the NSCI minor. We do not require that you meet with us to add the minor.
If, after consulting the requirements for your catalog year and major, you still have questions, please email your respective Academic Advisor
Read through the Undergraduate Major/Minor Checklists

Your faculty advisor is different than your academic advisor. Faculty advisors for NSCI majors provide advising and approval on independent study, directed research, and senior capstone options. Neuroscience faculty can also provide professional and graduate school advising.
Besides your academic advisor, faculty advisors can also help you identify and explore career options, help you develop a plan for reaching long-term goals; encourage you to take advantage of college success strategies and resources to help you reach academic goals; promote exploration of experiential-learning experiences and on-campus experiences to develop interpersonal and leadership skills, and explore career goals.
NSCI majors are assigned a faculty advisor after completing xxxx?. If you need further information send an email request to: mmrodriguez@arizona.edu

In addition to the NSCI and NSCS programs, the following related programs are available on the UA campus to students:

Pre-Health Advising
Advisors from the Pre-Health Advising Office can help you explore career paths in the health professions and ensure that you are on track for professional program admission. They advise students who are interested pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, physician’s assistance, etc. Your Pharmaceutical Sciences major advisor can make sure you are on track with basic academic requirements for your professional program of choice, but a Pre-Health Advisor will be able to connect you with numerous additional resources and opportunities.
Other UA Academic Advisors
If you are interested in exploring options for a minor or double major, you may meet with an advisor in that program. You can access contact info for all advisors on campus at the Advising Resource Center.
Tutoring/Study Groups/Writing Support
The UArizona Think Tankprovides free drop-in tutoring, writing assistance, and supplemental instruction for popular UA courses. Use Think Tank Resources early in the semester in order to stay on track with your coursework. These services aren’t just for students who are struggling! The Think Tank can also connect students with fee-based individualized tutoring, exam prep courses, and specialized workshops.
Honors Program
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium
UROC (pronounced you-rock) provides participants with excellent undergraduate research training and graduate school preparation through a research experience under the guidance of a faculty mentor, professional development and graduate admission workshops, and social networking and a community building with like-minded peers.

The Department of Neuroscience encourages all students to become involved in Research. By providing undergraduates with many opportunities to participate, through credit courses, paid positions, and a wide range of research areas, we feel there is something for everyone!
If you are curious about our program and student research opportunities, you may want to visit the Neuroscience Poster Fair, which is open to the public each spring.

You can visit the Undergraduate Research pagefor additional resources.
